Lunarovich Posted August 27, 2015 Share Posted August 27, 2015 So, I have installed Ubuntu 15.04 on my laptop with AMD Radeon HD 7500M/7600M Series. I'm using proprietary drivers on Ubuntu. Otherwise, LE and Steam won't work. I should also note that other games run fine and that I cannot see the difference in performance between Windows and Linux. Now, as to LE, it runs just fine under Windows. However, on Linux, I get about ~45 with very simple scenes. When I grab an object using First Person Shooter script, for example, fps drops to ~35 even though nothing new gets drawn on the screen. This kind of behavior annoys me very much. Since I don't want to go back to Windows and like LE very much, the issue is very important to me. Any help would be much appreciated. ocean Posted August 29, 2015 Share Posted August 29, 2015 I had a framerate problem too, though I have a pretty low-end video card so I wasn't expecting much. However, switching off the Catalyst AI seemed to give a huge fps increase. Quote Ubuntu 14.04 / 64bit. damvcoool Posted September 3, 2015 Share Posted September 3, 2015 is not LE at least not entirely, AMD/ATI Drivers are not optimized properly on linux so the run slower than on Windows. I should change a title of the post, since I do talk about a win-lin FPS diff anymore. Rather, I have good FPS at the beginning of the Ubuntu session. Suddently, without any obvious reason, I start to get low FPS until I restart the machine. Fiddled with catalyst center and with compiz, but to no avail... DerRidda Posted September 4, 2015 Share Posted September 4, 2015 I remember this very same behavior from my old rig and I absolutely do not see it with my new one. What I found out was that: a) Having any kind of web browser open in the background killed my performance, even when it wasn't doing anything b) The Leadwerks editor itself was in the way of decent performance, when I closed that and ran my projects directly via the binary I got decent performance. I think it was because of having a weak CPU but the behavior was so strange that I guess it isn't just that, it certainly isn't just the OS and drivers or even the Leadwerks engine, I sent a demo project around and was asking many Linux users for their performance reports and even weaker rigs were getting solid fps but those never ran the editor of course. The performances are great, and I don't see much difference between Win or Linux on my rig. What CPU and GPU are you using? Is it a notebook with AMD Apu? If you use a notebook, it's better not install CPU drivers from update manager. Idk why, but, after I tried Ubuntu on my netbook with CPU drivers installed, leadwerks did lag a lot. And I have AMD A8/R7 with SSD. **** Oh, sorry I see now what hardware you use. Do you have the same frames inside Windows? Is it huge difference or is it just like 5 fps? Is it huge difference or is it just like 5 fps? The main issue, in fact, is not a win-lin performance difference. As far as I can tell, the performance is nearly the same. Problem is the following: when I start the ubuntu session (after the restart of the computer), I get the same or near same FPS as in Win. However, after a few LE or LE game restarts, LE starts to show poor FPS. Something does happen in the mean time which slows the LE down. By the way, do you have swithcible GPU? AMD drivers may not work properly, you need to install drivers manually from AMD website. No, I don't have the switchable GPU. Regarding the AMD drivers, I installed them from Ubuntu repos: fglrx-updates. Why? Because in almost two years that I have this laptop, I didn't manage to install a working version of the AMD drivers from the AMD site. Either I had no clue why it did not work or the module would not compile for different reasons (for example, the last version of drivers is known not to work with the current ubuntu kernel). And I followed exactly the instructions from the AMD site, to that extent that I know them by heart probably now P.S. I've tried to run the executable directly, but to no avail. The same poor FPS. Sakru Posted September 4, 2015 Share Posted September 4, 2015 If you have switchible GPU then fglrx from Ubuntu repos will never work with your GPU. Because it installs driver for your APU and GPU is in sleeping mode. To be able to run rendering on GPU you need to install drivers from AMD, but this is not your case=). However, if no system monitor - such as top - is showing any resource leaking and the problem does not appear when I play games and use other game creation software, then there is a very high probability that the problem has to do something with LE. Every time I've litteraly followed AMD instructions and it messed up completely my computer. So, I do not dare to do it anymore. I'm tired of constant reinstalling everything. The problem is, LE sometimes works fine, but for the most of the time does not work fine. I cannot see a pattern to it. And I'm talking about same unchanged stock examples that come with a FPS project. Well, this makes LE rather unusable for me on Ubuntu, since there are other strange artefacts with terrain going on when LE stutters - wrong collision detection with the terrain, as character's feets are about a meter under the ground level, some strange textured triangles poke out of the surface, the terrain does not look smooth... I think that the problem is with changing the fglrx from one version to another without cleaning the config files!! I mean if you remove the previus version of fglrx and do not removing after reboot the config files by the command "sudo apt-get autoremove" or doing this in the synaptic pckg manager and rightaway installing the newer version even if aplying the "aticonfig --initial" before reboot or restart the x-server... it will messup and will not work correctly!
