Leadwerks Game Engine on Steam has been updated with bug fixes and a host of new features that are now out of beta.

    Crowdsourcing Post-Processing Effects
Although Leadwerks 2 featured an extensive set of post-processing effects, they were all hard-coded into the engine. This limited the ease with which new effects could be added, and caused all Leadwerks screenshots to look similar. In Leadwerks 3 we decided to implement a post-processing stack of shaders. You can attach post-processing effects to the scene root in the editor and move them around to get different appearances.
We're already seeing a greater diversity of looks and effects than what Leadwerks 2 could render. By effectively crowdsourcing post-effects, we're creating a stronger platform for innovation of new plug-in effects, from the realistic to the fantastic. The post-processing features are included in both the Indie and Standard editions of Leadwerks 3.1.

    Built-In Screenshot and Video Publishing
You can now publish screenshots and videos straight to your Steam profile from the Leadwerks Editor. To render a screenshot, select the Render > Render Screenshot menu item. After your image renders, press the Publish button to send it to Steam, where it will appear in your Steam profile and in the Leadwerks Community Hub.
    Improved Project Management Tools
To avoid confusion with outdated projects, the project's status will now be displayed in the project manager. If the project is older than the template folder, a warning icon will be displayed. In addition, the script editor will now warn once about an out-of-date project before running.

Leadwerks Software today announced their top-selling game development system on Steam, Leadwerks Game Engine, has gained a user base of over 10,000 paid customers. Although the game development space has seen a dramatic drop in prices and the entry of many free competitors, Leadwerks Game Engine continues to gain popularity by teaching complete beginners how to make games with no previous knowledge required, and providing a pathway to publish directly to Steam Workshop.

Leadwerks’ ease of use is made possible by a layered development system that gradually eases beginners into game development. At its simplest, Leadwerks Editor is a drag-and-drop system with a visual interface for creating game interactions. Users can drill down to the Lua script level to modify behavior and create new game mechanics. Experts can get even more advanced and access the Leadwerks API directly in C++ with the Standard Edition DLC. This layered development system means that Leadwerks provides a smooth learning curve that grows with the user as they learn more.

Leadwerks Game Launcher is the company’s portal for user-made games, and is currently available for free on Steam as an early access title with over 40 free games. Developers can publish their games directly to Steam Workshop with the game launcher or as a standalone. This lets developers share their games with the entire Steam community, with no waiting period and no approval process. The Game Launcher features a variety of experimental titles, delivering fun bite-sized experiences similar to the iOS App Store, but playable on a PC or Steam Machine.

“The Borrower” can be played on Windows or SteamOS for free with Leadwerks Game Launcher.

With Leadwerks Game Launcher on SteamOS, games can now be built on the desktop and played in the living room. Console gaming has historically been a closed system, with expensive developer licenses and strict rules about who can publish for the living room. With support for SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system for PC-based game consoles, Leadwerks Game Launcher allows anyone to create their own games they can play in the living room with a controller. All Game Launcher titles work seamlessly on SteamOS, even if they were developed on a Windows PC. Leadwerks provides full support for the new Steam Controller and is compatible with all OpenGL 4.0 hardware for Linux.

Leadwerks developers can build games on the desktop and play them instantly in the living room.

    Version 3.7
The upcoming version 3.7 update is planned to add a new vegetation system and other features. Unlike traditional vegetation systems that store each tree instance in memory, the Leadwerks 3.7 vegetation system allocates objects procedurally. This allows the user to create infinitely dense forests that consume no extra memory. The Leadwerks 3.7 vegetation system is set to be featured in a chapter in the upcoming book Game Engine Gems 3, published by A K Peters / CRC Press. Leadwerks Game Engine 3.7 is a free update scheduled for release in December 2015.

Leadwerks Game Engine: Indie Edition and the Standard Edition DLC can both be purchased for $99.99 on Steam. Leadwerks Game Launcher can be downloaded for free on Steam.

    About Leadwerks Software
Leadwerks Software was founded in 2006 to make game development fun and enjoyable. The company launched Leadwerks 3, their first multiplatform product, in April at the GDC 2013 expo. In July 2013 the company conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign to bring Leadwerks to the Linux operating system, reaching over 200% of their goal in just six weeks. A concurrent Greenlight campaign for Steam was also successful, making Leadwerks the first 3D game engine approved for distribution on Steam. Leadwerks Game Launcher was released as an early access title in September 2015, enabling anyone to publish their game directly to Steam Workshop.

Leadwerks Game Launcher lets you play a variety of creative, experimental, and just plain wacky mini-games made with Leadwerks Game Engine. Fly a spaceship through an asteroid field, play a round of miniature golf, or ride a lawn mower while dodging killer cows. It's free and there's a constant supply of new things to try.

With Steam Workshop integration, you can talk directly to the developers and give your feedback for new ideas to be incorporated into their games. Start a discussion and let the devs know what you liked about their game, what can be improved, and any new ideas you have to add to their game. Your feedback will help them design their game and create something new and unique for the Steam community to enjoy.

For developers, Leadwerks Game Launcher provides a much needed incubator for game ideas. Get feedback from players and start building a fanbase so you can rev up momentum for Kickstarter or Greenlight. Leadwerks Game Launcher allows anyone on Steam to play your game instantly, with no zip files, installers, or plugins.

Leadwerks Game Launcher is available now as an Early Access title free on Steam.

Based on the success of the recent Winter Games Tournament, and the growing number of titles posted on our site, a Greenlight campaign has been launched to put a standalone Leadwerks Game Player on Steam. This will allow free self-publishing so that any Steam user can easily and safely install and play your game.

    Play Free Games
The Leadwerks Game Player lets you install and play free games made by other Steam users with Leadwerks Game Engine. Choose from a wide variety of simple games like Asteroids3D, Crime Closer, Hunt for Food, and many more.
    Free Self-Publishing to Steam Workshop
If you are a Leadwerks Game Engine user, Leadwerks Game Player lets you publish your own games to Steam through the Steam Workshop. Leadwerks Game Player uses sandboxed Lua script so that malicious code can't be executed, allowing free and safe self-publishing to Steam.
Play Your Own Games in the Living Room
Leadwerks works with SteamOS, so you and your friends can play your own games on the PC or in the living room. Just press "Publish" and your game is instantly available to all your friends on Steam.
    VR Mode
Check the "VR Mode" checkbox to play any game in virtual reality with your Oculus Rift headset.

Leadwerks Game Engine on Steam and standalone versions have received a major update that include enhancements to the workflow and new features.

The FBX model importer will now auto-generate materials for imported models, and select the appropriate shader to use. This even works with animated models that use GPU skinning, so it's super easy to get new models into Leadwerks. Other enhancements include support for multi-track animations and animation sequence names.

Lua script post effects are now supported in the editor. This allows a greater range of plug and play post-processing effects. Scripts and shaders can be modified in real-time and the results are instantly visible, allowing you to fine tune the look and feel of your game.

Physics shapes can now be built into models for easy creation of physics. More advanced physics shapes can be created from constructive solid geometry brushes or auto-generated, but the new feature simplifies the task of defining physical geometry for most models.

A sharpen filter has been added to the built-in texture editor. Unlike paint programs like Photoshop and Gimp, the filter operates at every level of the mipmap chain. This means that fine details aren't washed out as the image is downsampled, and makes far away objects still look crisp and clear. Blurry stock photos can be easily transformed into beautiful game-ready textures, and the effect is adjustable so you can view the results instantly to get just the right look.

Controls for texture compression have been added, allowing you to select which DXT compression format to use, as well as support for the new DXTn compression format. This swizzles the blue and alpha channels in the texture to provide greater resolution for normal maps and eliminate the blocky artifacts compressed normal maps can experience.

Finally, the Linux build has received a refresh to update it to the visual style of Ubuntu 14.04. A new icon set makes Leadwerks for Ubuntu look sleek and professional just in time for its release in the Ubuntu Software Center:

All of these features help make Leadwerks the easiest way to make games that look amazing. Thousands of developers worldwide are using Leadwerks to create a diverse range of games, including first-person shooters, strategy games, and flight simulators.

Linux is a solid and secure operating system that’s perfect for gaming, but at this time Windows remains the lead platform for PC games. One company wants to change that by putting the game development process right on Linux. Leadwerks Software has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring their game development software to the Linux operating system. The company says this will allow users to build and play games without ever leaving the Linux operating system.

The company's Kickstarter page lists three goals for the campaign. First, they point out that most Linux games are ported over from Windows, rather than being developed natively on Linux. The company wants to change this by putting the game development process on Linux.

Second, the company hopes to expand the Linux library of games. They say that putting game development tools in the hands of Linux users will allow more Linux games to be built, and can even lead to Linux-exclusive titles.

Leadwerks is known for advanced graphics, and the company says they want to bring this to Linux. This will let Linux users play AAA games that run natively on Linux, instead of going through emulators like WINE. The company points out that the superior performance of OpenGL on Linux makes it the perfect platform for AAA games.

Leadwerks is also running a Greenlight campaign to put Leadwerks on Steam and integrate Steam features to streamline the game development process.

Leadwerks Software aims to raise $20,000 in 45 days to build Leadwerks for Linux. "We're really excited to be working with Steam and the Linux community," said Josh, founder of Leadwerks Software. "We think there's a unique opportunity here. The timing is right. I think Linux is really ready for mainstream PC gaming, and we really just want to take Linux gaming to the next level".

Leadwerks Software has released version 2.5 of their game development software Leadwerks Engine, featuring enhanced graphics and support for the Microsoft .NET application framework. Josh, CEO of Leadwerks said, “.NET support fits in with our goal of making game development simple and more approachable for programmers. We have an energetic community of coders who have been requesting .NET support for some time, and we’re happy to deliver that in Leadwerks Engine 2.5 along with enhancements to our renderer.”
Leadwerks Engine lets developers write games in C++, C#, VB.NET, and Lua script. The company seeks to simplify the complicated process of game development by providing a streamlined production pipeline and an intuitive command set. “With traditional game development tools, you've got to choose between ease of use and the quality of your results,” continued Josh, “We don’t see things that way. We believe powerful tools should also be flexible and fun to use, and that’s been our driving philosophy since the first version of Leadwerks Engine was released back in 2006. We’re very excited about extending support to a new audience using the .NET framework. We also support C# programming with Mono, in preparation for our plans to bring great graphics to mobile devices.”
Independent game developers are using Leadwerks Engine to deliver games with visuals that can go head-to-head with titles from major studios. Tricubic Studios is using Leadwerks to develop their helicopter flight simulator Combat-Helo. Richard Hawley, Director of Tricubic Studios, said that “Leadwerks gave us a shortcut to achieve the kind of special effects seen in major AAA titles including HDR, motion blur, infrared vision, and dozens of real-time lights for dramatic day or night scenes with no performance penalty. The vegetation system alone can compete with systems costing many times more. We needed an engine that could render hundreds of thousands of trees to convince the player they were flying a lethally efficient helicopter at low level. The performance of Leadwerks has just been amazing.”
Leadwerks Engine continues to be priced affordably for independent game developers at $199.99, with a source code license available under a separately negotiated agreement. A fully provisioned 30-day trial version can be downloaded from the Leadwerks website.
Founded in 2006, Leadwerks Software provides cutting-edge game development tools at an affordable price. By providing amazing technology that's easy to use, Leadwerks empowers game developers, digital artists, and architects to bring their 3D ideas to reality. With over 10,000 customers worldwide, Leadwerks has earned a loyal customer base and developed proprietary technologies that are now being leveraged to build new products and expand their market to include tablets and smart phones.

Following the successful debut of Leadwerks Game Engine: Indie Edition on Steam, Leadwerks Software today announced the launch of Leadwerks Standard Edition. This DLC on Steam adds support for programming in modern C++11 with Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2013.

C++ is the game industry’s leading programming language, due in large part to its superior performance and flexibility. However, the language is sometimes considered to be too complicated for indie developers to take advantage of. Leadwerks solves this problem by focusing on a useful subset of the C++ language, and providing a simple command library that works the same in C++ and Lua. This makes C++ game development fast and easy to control.

Adding C++ support to Leadwerks Game Engine unlocks access to a massive amount of free third-party game libraries, which are typically written for C++. Indie game developers can include new libraries for physics, AI, and virtual reality into their Leadwerks projects without having to wait for the developers to add an official bridge. This lets indie developers take advantage of the newest technologies and provides a degree of control other languages can’t match.

Leadwerks is designed to make game development easy for Steam’s 75 million users. A new renderer built on OpenGL 4.0 provides advanced graphics at an affordable price. Built-in level design tools make map design easy for users who don’t happen to be expert artists. Game code can be written with Lua, an easy-to-learn script language, or modern C++11. Finally, the royalty-free license means game developers can publish commercial games and keep 100% of the profits, with no additional payments due, ever.

The Leadwerks Game Engine: Standard Edition DLC can be purchased on Steam for $99.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Publish your summer-or-other-themed game to Steam Workshop or upload it to the games database before the deadline. You can work as a team or individually. Use blogs to share your work and get feedback as you build your game. If you need models for your game, we've got a summer model pack for you to use for free from Leadwerks Workshop.

Games must have a preview image, title, and contain some minimal amount of gameplay (there has to be some way to win) to be considered entries. It is expected that most entries will be simple, given the time constraints.

PRIZES: Rather than a competition, this tournamant is a "co-opetition". Everyone who participates gets a prize!

If this is your first game tournament entry, you will receive a cool Leadwerks sticker in the mail.

If this is your second game tournament entry, you'll receive a collection of three limited-edition professionally printed postcards featuring beautiful Leadwerks screenshots. Send them to a friend or put them on the wall.

If this is your fourth game tournament entry, you'll receive the new Leadwerks hoodie! This gorgeous garment makes you look like a Silicon Valley startup geek. This light jacket is perfect for air-conditioned spaces that are just slightly chilly.

If this is your fifth game tournament entry, you will receive a Steam Controller. The Steam Controller lets you play your entire collection of Steam games on your TV—even the ones designed without controller support in mind.

    Bonus Prize
All participants will receive an 11" x 17" printed poster for the Summer Games 2016 Tournament! This limited-run item will be printed only once, only for this event. This is your only chance to get this poster, ever.

    Make games and have fun!

    A.F.T.E.R.
    By 2ima #bad_connection
At this time, the game is only a simple scene with an empty field, but kudos for making a menu system and getting something out! We look forward to seeing what the author comes up with next.

    U-Rev
    By mdgunn

Valve Software's Steam is a game distribution platform used by millions of gamers worldwide. What started as simply a way to buy and update games has evolved into a vast ecosystem with instant messaging between friends, game hubs featuring players' screenshots and video, and workshops for sharing user-generated content. Last fall, Valve added software titles to its lineup of products, and implemented Greenlight, a system that lets users vote directly on which titles should be sold on Steam. Valve says this removed the bottleneck their manual approval process imposed so that more titles can be approved for Steam.

One company wants to push the Steam ecosystem even further by building the process of game development right into Steam. Leadwerks Software has announced the launch of their Greenlight campaign for Leadwerks 3: Steam Edition. Leadwerks is a visual tool for building any kind of 3D game, including dungeon crawlers, first-person shooters, and side-scrollers.

The company's Greenlight page explains they are working with the Steam SDK to integrate features of the Steam ecosystem. For example, the company plans to open up a workshop where Steam users can buy and sell digital goods for making games. This lets developers get all the content they need straight from Steam. Game assets like models and images take a long time to produce, so this feature could remove a big roadblock for producing finished games. Leadwerks is also simplifying the Steam publishing process by packaging up game files so they are ready-to-use in Steam. This makes it easier for indie developers to put their games on Steam.

Leadwerks founder and CEO Josh says that "I think Steam users are a good match for us because Valve has been such a big influence in my design. Our editor is similar to the Source Engine workflow, so modders will be able to pick it up pretty quickly. There's a lot of talent in the mod communities, and we're trying to channel that". Lua script is another benefit, since it's already used in hundreds of games, and many PC gamers are used to tweaking game code. The software also has some visual scripting features that make life easier for non-programmers who just want to design a game quickly.

You can vote for Leadwerks by visiting http://www.leadwerks.com/greenlight or find it in the software section of Steam Greenlight.

At last, it is time for the 2016 Leadwerks Winter Games Tournament! This is going to be a big one, for a few reasons.
We're very likely to reach 100 games in Leadwerks Game Launcher, which means it will be ready to move out of early access mode and be an official release on Steam.
As an experiment, you're getting two extra weeks to polish your games, with an extended deadline lasting until January 15th.

WHEN: The tournament begins Monday, December 5, and ends Sunday, January 15th at 11:59 P.M.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Publish your wintery-or-other-themed game to Steam Workshop or upload it to the games database before the deadline. You can work as a team or individually. Use blogs to share your work and get feedback as you build your game. If you need models for your game, we've got a Christmas props model pack for you to use for free from Leadwerks Workshop.

If this is your third game tournament entry, you'll receive the new Leadwerks USB stick, which is perfect for storing projects, code and artwork! The items will be printed with the Leadwerks logo for a distinctive look.

If this is your fourth game tournament entry, you'll receive a rockin' Leadwerks T-shirt in the mail. Wear it to show how cool you really are.

If this is your fifth game tournament entry, you'll receive the new Leadwerks hoodie! This gorgeous garment makes you look like a Silicon Valley startup geek. This light jacket is perfect for air-conditioned spaces that are just slightly chilly.

If this is your sixth game tournament entry, you will receive a Steam Controller. The Steam Controller lets you play your entire collection of Steam games on your TV—even the ones designed without controller support in mind.

    Bonus Prize
Everyone who participates also gets this bonus prize: an 11x17" poster mailed to your door! These posters will be printed only once, only for this event. This is your only time ever to get one, so make it count!

The first Leadwerks Winter Games tournament has begun!

    How to Enter
Submit your playable game to the Leadwerks Games Catalog, before January 15th. You can use any Christmas or non-Christmas related ideas. You can work together in teams or on your own. On the day of January 15th, a review of submitted games will be posted.
    Prizes
Rather than a competition, this tournament is a "co-opetition". The community is encouraged to help one another make fun playable games. Everyone who participates in the tournament will receive a prize.
If this is your first official game tournament entry, you will receive a Leadwerks sticker in the mail.

If this is your second tournament entry, you will receive a Leadwerks T-shirt in the mail.

If this is your third tournament entry, you will receive a rockin' Leadwerks beanie to keep your head warm. (Image not available yet.)

    Getting Started
To help kick off the contest, we've released the Christmas Props Pack by Rich DiGiovanni for free in the Leadwerks Workshop. Feel free to use these models to get started with your game idea. You can participate by posting blogs about your game's development, or just post some work-in-progress screenshots. (Also, if you need more models, Rich is available and does great work at a reasonable price.)

If you've got a serious project in development, this is a great opportunity to take a break and make a simple fun game, or you can even make a simplified teaser of your game to drum up a fan base. Here are a few entries from past tournaments.

Most of all have fun, and watch out for reindeer!

    The Van

Just another slow day at the biotech firm. You work at the main research facility as a mechanic for vehicle maintenance and general odd jobs around the place. You don't exactly know what they manufacture here. Very secretive need-to-know stuff and the non-disclosure papers seemed pretty clear about not talking about what you see here, otherwise the consequences are severe.

    Ball Hopper

Bounce across platforms to reach the finish, but make sure you get all the checkpoints along the way!

Throw as many water bottles as you like in the comfort of your own PC gaming chair without having to worry about spilling actual water and soaking your carpets! A Long Journey

Now whether that's what I've created for a WinterTournament is enough, no clue. But I hope you have fun. So far, there are only two maps. But there will be more. In total there are 10 maps with different scenarios, effects etc.

    Pig's Adventure Dodgeball

After a wild week at GDC 2013, it's nice to be back doing what I do best...writing code!

A new build of Leadwerks 3 is now available. We've added light vector maps so that lightmapped surfaces can display normal mapping effects. Lightmapped materials with normal maps should use the texture "Common/lightvectormap.tex" in slot 4. (If you create a new lightmapped material, this will be done automatically.)

This technique works by calculating the average light vector that influences each luxel in the lightmap. Each vector is weighted by the light's intensity and range to get an overall vector representing the direction most light is coming from. The light vectors are encoded in a secondary light map that looks like this:

This effect will even work with specular reflection, as seen in this totally over-the-top screenshot:

We also made about a dozen small fixes to the engine and editor. For more detail on recent issues resolved, visit the bug reports forum. Like any new software, we've had some teething problems, but it's pretty easy to resolve those issues as they arise. Bugs can be fixed as they are identified, but bad design is forever. Fortunately, I think we've got a great design and a good and stable development system.

The Mercenary Action Figure is now available for purchase in the Workshop Store. This custom-made high-quality character includes high-res 4096x4096 textures, an assault rifle, and a prefab set up to work with the new soldier AI script. Drop him into your game, set his team to "good" or "bad", and watch him fight!

The new soldier AI script adds a new dimension of gameplay to Leadwerks games. You can now easily add enemies that shoot back. Set the character up as an ally, an enemy, or create battles between different AI opponents.

Source art is included in FBX, PNG, and BMP formats.

Congratulations to Type Advantage for the release of Pump-Action Captain on Steam. This title began as a Kickstarter project clearing 170% of their modest $500 goal. The team used that momentum to fuel a successful Greenlight campaign, gaining approval in just ten days. Today marks the release of the game as an "Early Preview" title, which means it's a playable work in progress. You can play it now for just $4.19.

Be sure to support your fellow Leadwerkers. Buy the game, play it, and if you want, leave a review on Steam.
