fbx drag and drop not working

I'm using my MacBookAir under Windows 8. I've seen a few other posts about this and I'm experiencing the same thing. If I drag and drop the file into the editor nothing happens. If I copy the fbx to the folder in windows explorer then it gets converted to mdl.

Same thing with textures.

While we're at this, it would be really nice to have imported models be mapped right from the start. It takes so many more steps to import textures separately, convert them to materials and apply them them manually... The FBX should have all the proper texture/mapping and material information in it, right?

1. When you drag the file onto the window, does the mouse cursor change to show a "+" sign next to it?

2. When you release the file onto the Window, does the program log say anything? It should say something like this:

Converting "plane (2).fbx"...

Input: C:/Leadwerks/Projects/DarknessAwaits/plane (2).FBX

Output: C:/Leadwerks/Projects/DarknessAwaits/plane (2).mdl

FBX: Initializing scene...

FBX: File version: 6.1.0

FBX: Importing scene...

FBX: found mesh: Plane001

FBX: found animation: Take 001, fps: 30.000, start: 0.0000, end: 3.3333, length: 3.3333

MDL: total vertices: 4, total faces: 2

Converting "plane (2).fbx"...

Input: C:/Leadwerks/Projects/DarknessAwaits/plane (2).FBX

Output: C:/Leadwerks/Projects/DarknessAwaits/plane (2).mdl

FBX: Initializing scene...

FBX: File version: 6.1.0

FBX: found mesh: Plane001

MDL: exporting as skinned mesh

Conversion: Success

Hit escape?

I strongly suspect this may be a Windows issue.

Did the file actually copy to the directory? If it fails an error will be displayed saying it could not copy the file, so it sounds like the event isn't even being fired.

  • 4 weeks later...

Same here , i use Win7 , dragging FBX file on LE3 "Models" folder i have a "+" sign , but nothing is imported, even trying more times.

Same for TGA bitmaps, it must be some general Windows setting perhaps ?

So I simply use Menu import instead.

What is strange is when using the menu to import FBX it works, but the log is long and it contains some problems errors ? Could the problem come from here finally and would impact drag and drop ?

Is this Windows UAC protection again perhaps ?

Could the solution be to work on Windows USers directory instead ?

I don't think so. If that model doesn't show a thumbnail please file a report, but it doesn't look like anything except it loads the model to generate a new thumbnail image.
