Do they counter each other or do different things?

oh geez I feel dumb now. tongue.png Next time I'll search harder before posting noob questions. Thanks.

I tried using sharpen with soften mipmaps and it doesn't seem like they counter each other but I still don't fully understand these features so I'm not sure what to look for.

The soften filter can be used to decrease repetitiveness of a texture at a distance. It blends the texture into the average color of all the pixels, as it gets further away. It's probably not that useful anymore.
