Questions about the leadwerks game engine:

1. Would I be able to make a game that has non-linear gameplay?

2. Would I be able to make cars in a game that you can exit, and enter freely?

3. If I got the Leadwerks game engine sdk, would it come with the upgrade?

4. Would I be able to make a city with it, sort of grand theft auto style?

Thank you,

OH! Also, would I be able to make an mmorpg, or a huge rpg game with multiplayer capabilities (I'm guessing the answer is yes, most likely)?

Thank you,

Yes, but remember it is a hard and tedious task.

Although Leadwerks is probably one of the best engines to start with, it will take you time and determination, as well as programming skills. I would suggest either BlitzMax, C/C++ or C# knowledge.

Most people couldn't program a MMORPG themselves, as they are very hard to do. There are companies that specialize in making MMORPG engines, but they don't look anywhere near as good as the Lead Works engine - but at least they are ready to make an MMORPG with. Research those engines thoroughly first, because some claim to be more ready than what they really are.

I'm tackling on that task, and so far, it doesn't seem impossible at all. UI, movement, networking, all quite easy with Leadwerks + C#.

Hmm... thank you for all of your answers, but I have one more question.

Q. What kind of software would I need to go with LE to jump start me in the right direction? (Also if you could recomend a 3d modeling program that is under $300 dollars that is compatible with LE would be nice! ;))

Once again, Thank you for putting your time into my answers! :D

The new Blender 2.50 alpha is very easy to use, and can save as fbx and obj, which can be converted by the engine's tools to gmf. The last time I tried only obj worked, but it was enough to make a model for LE. I suppose in the final 2.50 version also fbx will work. Besides Blender, you should also have UU3D Pro, to get all kinds of models converted to LE. I use also 3DWS for architecture modelling. Then you need also Gimp and Paint.NET (might not be needed anymore, as LE seems to have now a better tool for DDS export, since it does seamless mipmap pattern based on average colors) for texture editing.

Blender is pretty ok to use, it's just a little complicated to use. I like something that has a 4 view port. I guess something like AC3d I just don't know if it'll work.

Oh what about a texture creator program? I was thinking about using texture maker from Thegamecreators.com, will that work?

I don't know what texture creator would be good for. I can make seamless textures in Gimp very easily by first offsetting the texture, and then brushing out the seams with the clone stamp tool using a low enough opacity on the pencil. You can configure Blender to have also 4 viewports, or as many you like, and save it as your default setting.

I dont know about the latest Blender 2.50 alpha, but you could set it to a 4 view port config by splitting the screens.

I like AC3D which I found much less awkward to use than blender. As for textures I use Gimp and Paint.NET and make my own so have never tried the software you mentioned.

I guess a better way t oput my question is...

What programs are you currently using with Leadwerks to help create your games?

For 3D modeling, it depends on your skill, budget, or whatnot. Blender is a good free solution, although, in my opinion, the learning curve is horrible. I used Milkshape 3D for some things, but I'm not sure everyone likes it.

For converting to DDS (the only texture format), there are tools in the download section. You can also use the free Paint.NET and plug-ins for the free GIMP or Photoshop.

For making textures, interface, design or whatnot, the GIMP, Photoshop, Paint.NET, whatever. You can also use TGC Texture Maker, which is a good tool, although you will have to save in a format and then convert it to DDS.

I'm not much use on 3D modeling because I haven't learned it, but I guess others have suggested pretty good options.

cassius, did you go to ac3d instead of hexagon?

Those are the two choices I am mulling over at the moment, I did really like AC3D.

2. Would I be able to make cars in a game that you can exit, and enter freely?

People like you pop up frequently on almost every game development-related forum in existence, but your post is interesting in that you want to make GTA and an MMORPG. There's a reason there are so few high-quality independent games, you know, and it's pretty obvious that you have extremely little experience -- you don't even know what tools you need to create the game's content.

Everyone says the same damn thing to posts like yours, too -- start small, start small, start small. By all means, make games, have fun with it, gain experience through it; but your GTA MMORPG is not going to happen.

How fortunate that my first post on this forum is so antagonistic.
