  1. Getting ideas into 3D is getting easier because of programs like FPSC.The only reason I don't use them is because of the quality of the finished product they produce. They don't have enough features but are going in the right direction. Maybe LE3 will improve on this and bring people a Game Creation Environment which can be used to create high quality Games and Programs via the imagination without getting bogged down in 'how do I code it' side of things.

In my opinion, not enough time is spent thinking about Game Structure. People jump into making a Game before thinking it through sufficiently. Honestly, it can take years just to develop a good idea to the point where it can be materialised into some sort of usable form. People are in such a hurry to 'get it out' when they haven't really got it sorted within. The results are a formula.. As within, so without.

  2. Metatron (I feel like I'm addressing an Archangel)

indeed they even nerfed lots of useful Lua commands to avoid players making bots.

I thought there was some particular reason I wasn't drawn to WOW :)

Maybe more people's lives are becoming boring and monotonous so they are reaching out for things that don't make you feel that way. Some find it in drinking and clubbing, some find it in extreme sports, and some find it in video games.

Yeah, that makes sense. If we accept the idea that we are largely responsible for what happens to ourselves then becoming involved in something like WOW could be a reaction to a boring world that we have created.

Coding in a 3D Engine and creating 'Other Worlds' could be another example of a reaction to a boring lifestyle.

  3. It also says this.. which implies a compulsive behaviour, one which an Individual has no control over.

    'Behavioral addiction

The term addiction is also sometimes applied to compulsions that are not substance-related, such as compulsive shopping, sex addiction/compulsive sex, overeating, problem gambling and computer addiction. In these kinds of common usages, the term addiction is used to describe a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences, as deemed by the user themself to their individual health, mental state, or social life'.

  4. Metatron,

I see your point. But for promotional purposes I think 'Leadwerks3D' tells more to the prospective User in a sea of www information. I'm sure that inhouse it would be shortened, the prerogative of the Developer.

    Perhaps a long version..'Leadwerks3D GameEngine'

  5. The fact that there have been zero commercial games with Leadwerks so far indicates we are doing something drastically wrong. To solve a problem, you have to first admit it exists. The brutal reality is that people are generally making beautiful walkthroughs with left-handed guns, and very little else.

I'm glad to hear Josh say this. Back in Leadwerks 1 he asked people what they wanted in the Leadwerks Engine and I put in a list of requirements. The response was.. 'You want me to make the game for you'. Now it is painfully clear that I'm not the only One to need those features to make the system usable. As I replied then. 'No I don't want you to make the game for me, just create a quality tool whereby the making of the game is an intuitive, imaginative experience which allows me to get my ideas into 3D easily'.

I'm watching and hoping that Leadwerks 3 will have what I require, in the meantime I've had to prototype my current project in Unity, not because I want to leave my good friends here but because it's just plain easier and I have to say that since I made the move, progress has shot ahead 50fold. As I've said in other posts, (one which was deleted), the end result graphics in the Leadwerks Engine are superior but for ease of use an Engine like Unity is streets ahead.

p.s. I actually find scripting with Leadwerk's Lua suits me more than Unity's Javascript.

  6. Nice Klepto2, but I'm having no transition with this. I have the latest download of the Leadwerks Engine. Placed the unzipped contents of your file into the Leadwerks Models folder. Ran the Editor and placed a painted terrain in the scene. Then placed the day/night object into the scene. At first I got errors for the 'intensity and sunglow' so I deleted the require lines for these two from the Lua file. I assume this was correct. Now when I place the day/night object into the scene there is a sky and there are no errors but no transition. Am I missing something? Thanks.

  7. I imagine people do see colours slightly differently but as with everything else, because we are human and have the same apparatus, there must be common conclusion on what is actually there. A sort of agreed upon reality. I wonder if Pantone are measuring the Human agreed upon Reality. :D

  8. Hi Flexman,

Web Designers and artists in general seem to like using the Pantone system too. I like the idea of standardising industry measurements but as you say it can be expensive to buy in to. Pantone have just renewed their system, with an additional 224 colours (making 1341 in all) and an improved swatch system which includes web colours. There's something magical about it... identifying and numbering colours.

  9. I have worked in the Printing industry for years and one of my earlier jobs was in the 'Ink Room' of a large firm where I matched ink colours to client mockups. This was a very subjective process which often led to some difficult and sometimes costly situations. One solution was to insist that clients match their mockup colours to the Pantone Colour system (a Printing Industry standard). Still there were problems because the Client often was often unable to match the colours themselves to environments, objects etc. that the job was going into, even if they had the Pantone Colour chart handy.

A new invention may have put paid to this.. a machine that can accurately measure the colour of any object.

  10. This is a useful idea... How about 'setting up a simple text input box'. A compass, a health box, a third person camera, how to start on a day/night solution, how to start on a moving clouds solution, how to make an object fade out/fade in, how to make an object glow. :)

  11. I'm still excited about my game (a FP Adventure Mystery) but have had to focus on other things for a while (Spring here and the garden needs attention, also money for bills is required). I'm also wondering about LE 3. At the moment my endeavours have been in LE 2.31. LE 3 will be like a new engine so it leaves the question... will I be able to port my game across? We shall see. :)

  12. What a great idea. To take the 'Developer Role' and turn it into a 'Game Playing Role'. I know 'God Games' have been around for a while, but I've never seen one one as profound as 'From Dust'.

My only reservation is that everything literally moves too fast. I wonder if they will have an option to slow it down. And of course unlike normally developed worlds, it wont be possible to export the worlds as standalone apps, everything remains 'ingame'.
