    The Van

Just another slow day at the biotech firm. You work at the main research facility as a mechanic for vehicle maintenance and general odd jobs around the place. You don't exactly know what they manufacture here. Very secretive need-to-know stuff and the non-disclosure papers seemed pretty clear about not talking about what you see here, otherwise the consequences are severe.

    Ball Hopper

Bounce across platforms to reach the finish, but make sure you get all the checkpoints along the way!
The controls are really simple, but don't think it's going to be easy!

    Water Bottle Flip

America’s latest craze is now brought to PC! You heard that right – Water Bottle Flip captures the thrill of lobbing perfectly good drinking water in plastic bottles through the air and trying to land it upright on various surfaces. This authentic polymeric encapsulated aquatic simulator realistically captures the exquisite arc of the bottle as it sails effortlessly through the air and onto the target! Throw as many water bottles as you like in the comfort of your own PC gaming chair without having to worry about spilling actual water and soaking your carpets! How many can you land consecutively on the table? Can you trick-shot onto the vending machine? Can you simply just land one before casting yourself out into the void out of frustration? Try it out and see!

    A Long Journey

Now whether that's what I've created for a WinterTournament is enough, no clue. But I hope you have fun. So far, there are only two maps. But there will be more. In total there are 10 maps with different scenarios, effects etc.

The results of the Leadwerks Summer Games Tournament are in! I think you will agree, this tournament produced some very fun playable games. Each author will receive a Leadwerks sticker via mail if this is their first entry, and a T-shirt if it is their second!

So without further ado, let's look at the games, in no particular order:

    Slafstraf 2
    By Slafstraf
An ominous industrial setting with plenty of interesting puzzles shows the progress the author has made since the original Slafstraf. Play it in the dark late at night for maximum effect!

    The Hankinator's Phantasmagoria
    By TheHankinator
The Hankinator is back, this time with a creepy sci-fi scenario he says was inspired by watching trailers for "Alien: Isolation". With a shocker of an opening and terrifying stealth gameplay, this one will keep you on the edge of your seat.

    Castle Defender
    By Haydenmango
Defend the castle! Grab the attackers with your mouse and fling them into the far reaches of the realm before they breach the inner wall! The fate of the kingdom rests in your index finger!

    Cuber

Defend against the waves of incoming enemies by building your cube base before they arrive. A wide variety of enemies and an interesting building mechanic make Cuber worth playing, so give it a try!

    The Mower
    By hirte
This classic arcade-style game starts out with a deceptively simple premise: Clear the yard of grass with your riding lawn mower. Oh did we mention that if any cows cross the wire connecting you to the generator, you lose a life? Go ahead, see how far you get...

    Marble Run
    By snowman0674
Based on the marble game template, this title leads you through a series of progressively harder maps. Good luck with the half-pipe!

    Beach Roll
    By Megalocerous
This marble game puts you in a tropical beach setting with a series of interesting courses to get through. Just wait until you see the new bouncy umbrella game mechanic the author added!

    A.F.T.E.R.
    By 2ima #bad_connection
At this time, the game is only a simple scene with an empty field, but kudos for making a menu system and getting something out! We look forward to seeing what the author comes up with next.

    U-Rev
    By mdgunn
The third marble game in our list, U-Rev takes a high-tech spin on the genre! Interesting level design and a challenging course make this worth playing.

Leadwerks Software announced today the release of Leadwerks 3, their new development platform for building mobile games with native code. Based on the technology developed for their successful game engine for PC, Leadwerks 3 brings a totally new approach to mobile game development.

While environments such as Unity and MonoDevelop use managed code...that is, code that is designed to be easily run on multiple devices...Leadwerks uses an approach called native code. Applications built with native code are optimized to work with each platform. That means games written with Leadwerks will run faster and be more powerful than their managed code counterparts.

Mobile is growing rapidly, but there still exists a gap between mobile gaming and the larger game industry, which has traditionally focused on consoles. Professional game studios overwhelmingly favor native code because of its speed and flexibility. By focusing on the standard the game industry already uses, Leadwerks provides both professional studios and indie developers with an easy pathway into mobile. Games written in C++ can be ported to Leadwerks 3 without having to rewrite them in a new programming language.

Leadwerks 3 brings some innovative new approaches to the table:
The editor features tools for building game levels using a technique called constructive solid geometry. This streamlines the process of creating games, and makes it easier for artists to see what their games will look like as they build them.

Leadwerks 3 uses automatic asset conversion. This means that images and objects can be reloaded on-the-fly, so an image file can be modified in Photoshop and the result will show up in the editor right away. This removes tedious steps from the game development workflow.

AI is supported out-of-the-box. The traversable areas AI can travel within are highlighted in the editor as you build your game level. Pathfinding is dynamic, meaning that if a door opens or a drawbridge lowers, the AI is smart enough to take the new routes that appear.

The script language Lua is also supported, and can be combined with games written in native code. Scripted objects can be linked together in a visual flowgraph editor. This makes it easy to set up game interactions, something that can be a challenge when working with development platforms based solely on code.

Leadwerks CEO Josh said that “Leadwerks 3 is a big step forward for our company and our users. We’re bridging the gap between mobile gaming and the traditional game industry.” The product received a favorable response at the GDC 2013 expo. ”C++ is the game industry standard. Our market research at GDC 2013 revealed a huge demand for a cross-platform game engine built on native code. We found the design philosophy of Leadwerks resonates with a lot of developers.”

Leadwerks 3 can be purchased from the company’s website for $199, with add-ons for iOS and Android publishing available separately. A source code license is available for professional studios. A 30-day trial can be downloaded from the company’s website.

Leadwerks Software has provided game development tools to thousands of developers worldwide since 2006. It’s technology has been used in commercial games, education, training simulations, and military applications. To find out more, please visit www.leadwerks.com.

An update for Leadwerks 3 has been released, bringing new graphical enhancements to mobile games. Building on the efficient art pipeline and user-friendly tools of Leadwerks 3, the engine now supports projected shadows for characters and other dynamic objects. This technique works by casting a shadow onto the surrounding world geometry, to provide real-time shadows that run fast on all platforms.

To enable dynamic shadows on a single object, just select it in the editor and choose the new "Dynamic" option in the "Cast Shadows" property. You can also do this in code by calling Entity::SetShadowMode(Light::Dynamic).

Leadwerks 3 has also gotten a visual upgrade with the addition of post-processing effects. In Leadwerks 2, all post-processing effects like volumetric light scattering, screen-space ambient occlusion, depth-of-field, and bloom were hard-coded. That is, they were written into the core engine and it was difficult to customize the renderer. Leadwerks 3 has added a new command, Camera::AddPostEffect(), which allows the user to attach a shader right to a camera, to automatically render post-processing effects.

The new update also includes features to make it easier to share projects. The Project manager has been outfitted with new Import and Export buttons. You can export an entire project as a single ZIP archive. You can also import a project from a .zip or .werk project file. This makes it easy to share projects and collaborate with other Leadwerks developers as a team.

Leadwerks is a fast and flexible development platform for building mobile games with native code. You can download a 30-day trial version on the website here.

After blasting through Greenlight in just 27 days, Leadwerks Software today announced the launch of Leadwerks Game Engine: Indie Edition, exclusively available on the Steam distribution platform. The arrival of Leadwerks adds 3D game development software to Valve’s lineup of creative and productivity tools.

Leadwerks is designed to make game development easy for Steam’s 65 million users, with a royalty-free license for making commercial products. A new renderer built on OpenGL 4.0 provides high-end graphics comparable with modern AAA games at an affordable price. Built-in level design tools based on constructive solid geometry make map design easy for users who aren’t expert artists. Game code is written with Lua, an easy-to-learn script language that also happens to be used in hundreds of commercial games like Crysis, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. Extensive documentation is provided, with examples to demonstrate every aspect of building a 3D game.

Leadwerks promises to provide an easy entry mode to overcome the console barrier that has traditionally kept indie game developers at a distance. Last summer the company raised over 200% of their funding goal on Kickstarter to add support for the Linux operating system. With Linux development nearly complete and the pending release of Valve’s Steam Machines, a disruptive alternative to traditional consoles, Leadwerks looks ready to provide an easy route to console publishing via Steam. The company is attending Steam Dev Days next week to learn more about SteamOS and Valve’s new hardware.

Leadwerks Game Engine: Indie Edition can be purchased on Steam for $99.

Leadwerks Game Engine 4.4 beta is now available on the beta branch on Steam. This adds support for virtual reality with the OpenVR library. OpenVR supports both the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift headsets.

To enable VR mode in your Leadwerks game, simply call the command below. If a VR headset is detected and initialized, this function will return true:

    VR:Enable()

Any cameras not attached to a rendering target will render directly to the headset views. Both eyes will be rendered to automatically. The camera's position and orientation will automatically be tracked, and will override any positioning you give it in your code. You can switch between room-scale and seated VR tracking with the following command:

    VR:SetTrackingSpace(mode)

Where mode is one of the constants VR.Roomspace or VR.Seated. Use the command VR:CenterTracking() to re-center the camera, in seated VR mode only. The VR system will automatically shut down when your game exits. You also no longer need to call System::ShutDown in your C++ code, as this will be done automatically when the main() function returns.

Controllers will automatically be detected and render in your view. You can use the VR::GetControllerButtonDown(devicenum, button) and GetControllerAxis(devicenum, button) commands to get button presses and movements. The devicenum parameter will typically be zero or one, and the button argument can be one of the following constants:
    VR.TouchpadButton
    VR.GripButton
    VR.MenuButton
    VR.TouchpadAxis
    VR.TriggerAxis
    VR.TriggerButton

At this time, you cannot hide the default controllers. Button motion will not be rendered in the virtual world. Camera culling does not exactly match the VR render frustum, and some objects will pop out of view at the periphery of your vision. Post-processing effects should not be used in VR, as they don't always look right, and the VR renderer uses a half-float RGB buffer to store screen positions, since depth reconstruction cannot be used with sheared projection matrices. The current build is a beta and may change before the final release.

A coding exercise done for the Halloween Game Tournament. It's not "Halloween-ish" but I think it's something else that will make you scream and curse out loud. I'll continue to update the project a little at a time until the Tournament ends.

This is my first game created with Leadwerks! It's an entry for the Halloween 2015 games contest. It's not overly polished, some parts I couldn't figure out (for example, setting the camera to NOT go through buildings!). Hope you enjoy it!

The Leadwerks Engine 3 Forums are open to all Leadwerks developers so you can post your ideas and get information on the development of Leadwerks Engine 3. Additionally, forums are now divided up by product, with forums for Leadwerks Engine 2, Leadwerks Engine 3, and 3D World Studio. We think this organization will provide more room to grow in the future.

Linux is a solid and secure operating system that’s perfect for gaming, but at this time Windows remains the lead platform for PC games. One company wants to change that by putting the game development process right on Linux. Leadwerks Software has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring their game development software to the Linux operating system. The company says this will allow users to build and play games without ever leaving the Linux operating system.

The company's Kickstarter page lists three goals for the campaign. First, they point out that most Linux games are ported over from Windows, rather than being developed natively on Linux. The company wants to change this by putting the game development process on Linux.

Second, the company hopes to expand the Linux library of games. They say that putting game development tools in the hands of Linux users will allow more Linux games to be built, and can even lead to Linux-exclusive titles.

Leadwerks is known for advanced graphics, and the company says they want to bring this to Linux. This will let Linux users play AAA games that run natively on Linux, instead of going through emulators like WINE. The company points out that the superior performance of OpenGL on Linux makes it the perfect platform for AAA games.

Leadwerks is also running a Greenlight campaign to put Leadwerks on Steam and integrate Steam features to streamline the game development process.

Leadwerks Software aims to raise $20,000 in 45 days to build Leadwerks for Linux. "We're really excited to be working with Steam and the Linux community," said Josh, founder of Leadwerks Software. "We think there's a unique opportunity here. The timing is right. I think Linux is really ready for mainstream PC gaming, and we really just want to take Linux gaming to the next level".

The Mercenary Action Figure is now available for purchase in the Workshop Store. This custom-made high-quality character includes high-res 4096x4096 textures, an assault rifle, and a prefab set up to work with the new soldier AI script. Drop him into your game, set his team to "good" or "bad", and watch him fight!

The new soldier AI script adds a new dimension of gameplay to Leadwerks games. You can now easily add enemies that shoot back. Set the character up as an ally, an enemy, or create battles between different AI opponents.

Source art is included in FBX, PNG, and BMP formats.

Based on the success of the recent Winter Games Tournament, and the growing number of titles posted on our site, a Greenlight campaign has been launched to put a standalone Leadwerks Game Player on Steam. This will allow free self-publishing so that any Steam user can easily and safely install and play your game.

    Play Free Games
The Leadwerks Game Player lets you install and play free games made by other Steam users with Leadwerks Game Engine. Choose from a wide variety of simple games like Asteroids3D, Crime Closer, Hunt for Food, and many more.
    Free Self-Publishing to Steam Workshop
If you are a Leadwerks Game Engine user, Leadwerks Game Player lets you publish your own games to Steam through the Steam Workshop. Leadwerks Game Player uses sandboxed Lua script so that malicious code can't be executed, allowing free and safe self-publishing to Steam.
Play Your Own Games in the Living Room
Leadwerks works with SteamOS, so you and your friends can play your own games on the PC or in the living room. Just press "Publish" and your game is instantly available to all your friends on Steam.
    VR Mode
Check the "VR Mode" checkbox to play any game in virtual reality with your Oculus Rift headset.

Leadwerks Game Engine 4.2 is now available on Steam. This update adds new features to make game development easier than ever. The free update goes out today to over 10,000 paid users on Steam.

Version 4.2 integrates analytics into Leadwerks games with a free gameanalytics.com account. This allows developers to view statistics on player behavior and identify any trouble spots their game might have as players progress through levels. By viewing a summary of all player behavior, developers can make data-driven decisions and get real-time information instead of relying solely on written feedback.

New graphical features make Leadwerks games more beautiful, including fast ray-traced reflections with a new post-processing effect called screen-space reflection (SSR). Easy heat haze, glass refraction, and soft particles can now be added to games just by dragging a prefab into the scene. Textures can now be added to spotlights to project an image onto walls.

New animation commands and a built-in animation management system make it easier to display game characters with fluid movements. Just set the sequence to play, add a transition time, and the engine will auto matically manage and play a queue of blended animations. A bug that sometimes caused animated characters to render incorrectly on Linux has also been fixed.

It's now easier to purchase items in the Leadwerks Workshop Store. Clicking on the buy button in the editor will open the selected item in the Steam client, instead of requiring you to log into the Steam website through a web browser.

The professional edition has been upgraded to Visual Studio 2015, and is now compatible with the latest version of GCC with C++11 support.

The Leadwerks Winter Games Tournament is running until January 15th, and there’s still time to create a mini-game and publish to Steam Workshop. All participants receive a prize, including stickers, posters, shirts, hoodies, and even Steam controllers.

Leadwerks Game Engine and the Professional Edition DLC are both on sale during the Steam Winter Sale with an 80% discount. Leadwerks Game Launcher can be downloaded for free on Steam.

The latest game tournament brought in a small number of games, but they more than made up for it in quality. Each title that was submitted was pretty fantastic. The tournament was held during an odd month and there was no banner across the forum to remind people about it, so that is something that can be improved in the future. Each entry will receive an 11"x17" poster in the mail. Please make sure your name, address, and phone number (for customs) are correct and up to date in your Leadwerks account info.
Without further ado, I bring you the games:
    Dwarf Beard
A solid base that can be turned into a nice RPG, Dwarf Beard pits you and your beard against a horde of goblin sentries. There are several interesting mechanics and the polish is very good.
    Zelrio
This is a fun adventure game with a and well-done visual style that looks and plays great. Find stars, collect coins, evade monsters, and reach the end goal. I was not able to progress past the first level, so I am not sure if there are more levels or not, but it's definitely worth checking out.
    House in the Hollow
A shooter that is literally on rails...actual rails! Have fun blasting balloons in this spooky funhouse ride.
    J-Train
This is a very interesting learning game that teaches you Japanese characters. The interface still needs some work but it's a very cool idea and the polish and execution are excellent.
Also check out "VR testje weer" in the game launcher if you like killing chimpanzee zombies in VR. There's no title image so it does not qualify for the tournament...but it has monkey zombies in VR:

Leadwerks Game Launcher lets you play a variety of creative, experimental, and just plain wacky mini-games made with Leadwerks Game Engine. Fly a spaceship through an asteroid field, play a round of miniature golf, or ride a lawn mower while dodging killer cows. It's free and there's a constant supply of new things to try.

With Steam Workshop integration, you can talk directly to the developers and give your feedback for new ideas to be incorporated into their games. Start a discussion and let the devs know what you liked about their game, what can be improved, and any new ideas you have to add to their game. Your feedback will help them design their game and create something new and unique for the Steam community to enjoy.

For developers, Leadwerks Game Launcher provides a much needed incubator for game ideas. Get feedback from players and start building a fanbase so you can rev up momentum for Kickstarter or Greenlight. Leadwerks Game Launcher allows anyone on Steam to play your game instantly, with no zip files, installers, or plugins.

Leadwerks Game Launcher is available now as an Early Access title free on Steam.
