Tree normals - some advice

I'm confused by problems with tree normals. I have a lot of flat looking trees, when a directional light is low down this exaggerates the flat nature of the LOD1 trees (see attached image).

 

Given the low poly nature (pun partially intended), what's the best practice for arranging vegetation normals with Leadwerks?
