  1. apart for it being a pain when smoothing out after inflating (it crashes quite easily) it is also very intelligent, as soon as you start the app back up it asks you if you would like to continue, if you press yes you are right back where you were before the crash!

It is also very fast and uses up a lot less memory then 3dcoat's voxel sculpting.

Downside with the tesselation sculpting is that when doing symetry, inflate can totally ruin your mesh, this also have a tendency to crash the application.(Only an issue if you inflate close to the middle of the mesh (dividing line)).

The user interface is the easiest and most intuitive I have seen in any modeling application. Absolutely amazing.

  2. with Win7 you can use snipping tool, just open the start menu, type in "snipp" and it should appear.

Another way is to use print screen, open paint or any other image editor software and paste.

Almost forgot about the print screen hahaha, I got a mac keyboard on my windows PC so I dont have that button, caused me headaches for a long while :)

  3. Today I found a new tech demo for Infinity TQE. And the video is absolutely astonishing, but it gets me thinking.

How much, and how big, can you really make a game before it just gets too much?

Most projects that gets a too big scope gets too little focus on the details, that is my experience at least.

So far Infinity TQE have shown great promise and continues to do so, but how interested will people really be to play a game that is so vast as to have not just thousands of star systems, not just hundred of thousand of star system, not even just millions, but one hundred million star systems? Lets say you get 10 million players to play, which is a good number in todays online gaming market, you would still have 10 star systems for every player in the game.

Another really interesting aspect to this game is that most of the models in it is made by the community around the game.

But perhaps this is what makes it even more intriguing?

Perhaps the community already feels much more attached to it because they help contribute to it from the very start to finish? I must say I do.

I will of course give this game a go when it launches, but I must say, I think I have found that I preffer story driven detailed games over large scale mmo.

And here is the eyecandy techdemo of infinity:

  4. trying the beta for 2.32 but whenever i create a terrain it seems to want to crash with the message EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. Also does this when trying to open an existing map.

I have this exact same problem myself.

  5. If you want something like a wiki but cleaner I would reccomend using joomla.

By adding the JCE text editor it is easy and quick to add images to articles.

By adding code citation it is easy to add highlighted code in virtually any language, I think over 150 languages are supported.

For additional file uploading I would recommend using JFU Flash Uploader, incredibly easy to use, lightweight and intuitive uploader.

I am setting up an html/css/php learning site for work using this setup myself. I went through a few alternatives before falling back on joomla. Wordpress didnt have any good code highlighting capabileties, Drupal is way too time consuming to set up and maintain, Wikis were too messy. Joomla is very simple to use and set up. It also have print friendly print and PDF versions of all articles :(

So the procedure would be to get joomla installed, install JCE and Code Citation, both are free. A file uploader, my reccomendation (JFU) cost money, I think 50 euro for unlimited domains and 10 euro for one domain. 80 euro for source I believe. Trial is available and supports uploads of 2mb files. There are alternative file uploaders.

Redmine might be another system to look at, but it is more of a project management system much like trac.

If you want more information on the joomla solution you can contact me on MSN.

  6. you need to have a seperate texture file with the normal man usually named same-as-texture(+dot3).file-extension. Your model needs a .mat file, this .mat file loads the texture information. Good luck :)

Ill try to explain further at a later time, already late for work! :P

  7. well you could always open the models up in a free modeling software such as blender and re-save the meshes, right?

I am not accustomed to using blender myself, but I dont see why that shouldnt be a viable option.

Another alternative is perhaps wings3d or another free modeling application.

As long as you can keep the meshes separate picking them out again and exporting them to their own model files should be a breeze.

I use modo myself because it is really easy to use, however, I wouldnt reccomend forking out a thousand dollars just to scale models ;)

PS: import each model into their own mesh/layer/object (whatever the application calls it). Some modeling applications may require you to copy your mesh, open a new scene, pasting the mesh, then exporting, to get only the desired mesh in the exported model file. Having them in seperate meshes/layers/objects will also allow you to scale the entire model without scaling the other models (in most applications).

  8. Well, according to ITAvisen.no a few years back, game piracy skyrocketed just around the time when demos became something of a forgotten art. I for one really like to try out something before I purchase it, luckily I got rich mates that buy any and all games so I always get to try them out at their place, if I didnt, I might consider piracy in order to see if a game is worth more then 20 minutes of my frustration.

What my meaning is, more and more games that is made out to look superawesome turns out to be rather bland and worse yet, something you would rather want to forget. Empire: Total War is one game I wish I never purchased! (I loved all Total War titles up to that one)

    Is piracy justified though? hardly.

  9. aww well that stings.

Actually, if you mean the application part of it, that you cant install it at work, I dont think you really need the application part to upload things to your account, not entirely sure though, but seems odd otherwise.

Anyways, hope you find a solution you are comfortable with.

  10. A nice litle site is www.dropbox.com

Its a place where you can keep upload (and share if you want to) any document as far as I know. 2 gigabyts of space with the free account.

It also allows you to keep track of several versions of a file, so you can go back and fetch an older version if you happen to screw up.

    Just a suggestion :)

  11. I aggree somewhat. It is true that the project needs to be boxed in, Josh gives the list of features and manages assets, we (the community) should provide the assets and scripts or script snippets.

However we do need enthusiasm, this could be shown in the form of improving upon the design instead of adding to it. I really like the idea of a game thats playable and where I can use parts of it to learn how to code my own things if I ever need to. And that is why I would very much like to see this project succeed. Enthusiasm is also very important for that to happen.

Might I suggest a completely seperate forum section for this project? It would do it good to get things organized with time.

  12. if you are looking for free and your market will consist of mostly low end machinery you may want to consider ogre3d.

I have no personal experience using it, but a lot of mates swears by it as being a good engine to run on most low to medium range computers.
